4 Electronica Mixes You Should Be Listening to Right Now
Hi Music That Is Good listeners,
I’m Matt, a good friend of the MTIG team, and I listen to a ton of electronic music. From deep house to chillhop, from drum and bass to nu-disco, I am constantly looking for new tracks to power me through late night work sessions, workouts, and hangouts with friends. I hope that I can, in this and future articles, show you what I consider to be the best in this expansive and ever-shifting genre.
To start out, one of my favorite things happening in the electronic music world right now is the plethora of podcasts and mixes produced by artists showcasing not just their own tracks, but what’s influencing them at the moment. If you are looking for a place to start listening on your own, BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix, Above and Beyond’s Group Therapy, Mixmag’s the Lab, and the Magician’s Magic Tape are great avenues to explore. Here are 4 of my personal favorite mixes out right now, so let’s plug in and have a good time.
1. Attlas Storyline Pt. 1
Off of Deadmau5’s Mau5trap label, Attlas is one of my favorite producers working right now. His relaxed, but highly technical, tracks are an absolute joy to listen to. The Storyline series contains some of the most unique mixes out there, blending together not just tracks but a narrative as well, heightening the entire listening experience. If any of the mixes on this list are must-listens, this is the one.
2. Good Memories Volume. 7
The Good Memories series is a quarterly podcast of the best chillhop/downtempo tracks perfect for late nights and Sunday mornings. Vol. 7 makes this list because it features some of my favorite artists in the genre right now, including Tusken, Emune, and The Deli. I keep finding myself listening to it over and over again.
3. Move D with Love 2016
Move D, also known as David Moufang is one of the great German ambient masters. This gargantuan 3-hour mix, created using only vinyl, is a testament to the mixing skills he has been honing since the late 80s in Berlin’s nightlife scene. He cites being inspired by futurism and space in his music and this mix is no exception. Throw it on, listen to it for an hour, then come back to it. It won’t disappoint.
4. Bonobo @ Mixmag Live 2017
If you don’t know Simon Green, better known by his moniker Bonobo, then do yourself a favor and go listen to his stuff immediately. This mix, released as a celebration of his new album Migration, encompasses a music career of 6 full-length studio albums, 18 EP’s, and countless mixes. While he has a number of monumental mixes in the books such as his 2014 Essential mix with Pete Tong, this mix easily takes the cake. Encompassing an awe-inspiring number of tracks that he has collected over the years, this mix seamlessly transitions through a series of different movements and styles with an elegance only an artist like Bonobo can provide.
